An Untypical Sunday

We are getting old and lazy. Today I didn't get up until 7.30 am and Jean slept in another hour after that. But then after all we didn't get home until 10.30 the night before. And then of course there is the wind down time in bed with a book. For people who are in bed by 8.30 that is late.

We did get down to the pool for a light workout.

It only went down hill after that. I sat around the kitchen or lay on the lounge and finished reading a library book “Rendezvous with Destiny” by Michael Fullilove. This is the story of the lead up to WW2 and FDR's team of envoy's who moved about the world and paved the way for the USA's entry into the war. It is written in a very readable style and brings to life the main characters Sumner Welles. “Wild Bill” Donovan, the amazing Harry Hopkins, Averell Harriman and Wendell Wilkie.

Harry Hopkins was the character that amazed me with his ability to gain the trust and admiration of Churchill, Stalin and others with such ease. Yet he was a frail sickly man and former social worker who was so admired by FDR that he lived in the Whitehouse as a guest. Interesting how FDR was hell bent on going to war against Hitler but could not do so without dividing the country. He did every thing possible to position the USA to go to war and was hoping Hitler would provide the excuse but in the end the Japanese did it for him. Always interesting to think what would have happened if the massive movement of food and arms to Great Britain had not occurred.

One small outside job did get finished. The mulcher had shed one of its 16 flails during the week which gave it a slight shudder being. Not a task I was looking forward to addressing but surprisingly it took less effort than first thought to replace. Sometimes these little maintenace tasks can take hours on aging equipment but not so today.
